Chocolate larvae forces store closure
Chocolate and moth graphic
A supermarket in the south Wales Valleys has been closed after maggot-like larvae were found crawling inside boxes of chocolates and sweets on its shelves.

The shop in Tonyrefail was shut after an infestation of moths and moth larvae was discovered following a complaint by a member of the public.

At first glance, this infestation might have been difficult to see

Protection inspectors found the larvae had bored its way through cellophane, cardboard and foil wrappers into the confectionary.

On Monday, magistrates issued an emergency order to ensure the store remains shut until it has been cleaned and the infestation removed.

ATC Supermarket in Bryngoleu was first closed on Friday after officers found a large number of moths flying around the store.

Further inspection

Lester Lewis, public protection officer for Rhondda Cynon Taf council, said: "This problem came to light as a result of a complaint from a vigilant member of the public.

"At first glance, this infestation might have been difficult to see.

"We have now been advised by the supermarket proprietors that they are calling in specialist cleansing contractor."

The contaminated food was taken away for further inspection and is to be destroyed.

Anyone who has concerns about food they have purchased from the ATS Supermarket recently are advised to contact the council's food health and safety section on 01443 406441.
