Gnomes not a hazard
Garden ornament
One of Ms Humphries' roadside creatures
A mid Wales cafe owner is celebrating after she won her fight to keep her collection of garden ornaments on display at the roadside.

Powys county council prosecuted Dot Humphries for refusing to remove the collection which has stood for four years outside her cafe in Machynlleth.

Magistrates visited the site on Thursday morning to check out claims that the stone figures and pots were obstructing the highway.

Magistrates ruled Humpty Dumpty was not a distraction
And they concluded that the bright creatures could go on being there.

Powys council told Llandrindod Wells magistrates court that the colourful collection should be removed because it was a hazard to pedestrians and cyclists and distracting for motorists.

Ms Humphries' defence argued that they were too small to be a nuisance and the prosecution was completely unnecessary.

The magistrates agreed and ruled the figures could stay.

Afterwards, Ms Humphries said she was delighted and relieved, while her solicitor Rob Hanratty said common sense had prevailed.

The Welsh Assembly - which ordered the prosecution - is considering an appeal.
