Website aims to lure Hollywood films
Film star Angelina Jolie
Film star Angelina Jolie on location in north Wales
A massive online photo library of picturesque film locations across Wales has been set up to entice lucrative Hollywood productions.

Ireland and Scotland have benefited economically from location shoots on major productions and now the North Wales Film Commission hopes its database of up to 30,000 film locations could lure a multi-million film to Wales.

Angelina Jolie was full of praise for Wales' beautiful scenery when she was on location filming Tomb Raider II.

The scenery has been described as "wonderful"

The commission hopes to attract other stars of her quality in new films, which bring in much needed revenue to the rural economy.

Top producers feel Angelina Jolie's stay in north Wales could result in more big names arriving on the scene, as the area's reputation goes from strength to strength.

The production team involved with the action adventure sequel Tomb Raider 2, which was filmed at Llyn Gwynant near Beddgelert in Snowdonia, felt the area met their needs ideally.

The movie saw 1m being spent in the region during the location filming and 50 businesses gained work as a result.

North Wales Film Commission's Carwyn Edwards said there had already been substantial interest in the online database from the United States, with 50,000 hits on the site before it had even officially launched.

Angelina Jolie: Delighted with location

"There is a constant rumour mill linking this part of Wales to new films and we have to battle with other locations.

"Film companies tell us they want information and images as soon as possible and as many as possible, so we listen to the industry and try to deliver.

"We have as many as 50 images showing every angle on one single location.

We had all these wonderful images sitting on our shelves, which should be out there in the world and this is a very cost effective service

Carwyn Edwards

"There has been interest from Hollywood studios in the site, including Paramount and Universal Studios. "Economic development of the region is the reason for the website.

"We hope to get the database onto the Tomb Raider II official site, which will get millions of hits, and hopefully people will filter down to our site."

The database, which will contain 30,000 images of houses, castles, rivers and mountains, has been put together through the College Business Partnership.

"We had all these wonderful images sitting on our shelves, which should be out there in the world and this is a very cost effective service."
