Stolen car in 'wrong way' fatal crash
Motorway generic
Three other people were hurt in the collision
A 25-year-old man who died after driving the wrong way down the M4 near Cardiff was driving a stolen car, police have said.

They named the driver of the Ford Fiesta as Ricky Lee Griffiths of Trebanog in the Rhondda.

The car was seen travelling eastbound along the westbound carriageway between junctions 30 and 32 around the north of the capital.

Officers believe that the car may have travelled for around 15 miles on the wrong carriageway.

It is understood that he joined the M4 at the Sarn services junction, near Bridgend, and the collision happened on the outskirts of Cardiff.

The Fiesta then crashed with three other cars and a goods vehicle at 2215 BST on Tuesday.

Mr Griffiths was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where he was later pronounced dead.

The female driver and passenger of one of the cars struck, a BMW, were also taken to hospital with leg and arm injuries.

Their injuries are thought to be serious but not life-threatening. A third person suffered slight injuries.

Firefighters had been called to the scene and helped release three people from their cars.

Meanwhile, police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers of the motorway sector of South Wales Police on 01656 655555 extension 20332.
