Super cars in high speed action
Formula Saloons car
The cars are extremely powerful
Motor sports enthusiasts have a chance to get up close and personal for some high octane racing action in south west Wales this weekend.

Super touring cars from the original BTCC Championship will be battling it out at the Welsh Motor Sports Centre in Pembrey.

Races provide spectacular action

Thousands of spectators are expected to watch the first of 12 rounds in the 2002 Formula Saloons Championship with more than 20 cars taking part.

Qualifying begins on Saturday where the cars will be pushed to their limit looking for an extra tenth of a second advantage for that all important grid position on Sunday.

It is a sport which encourages the spectator to meet the teams, the drivers and especially the cars.

The Formula Saloons series has become one of the most prestigious multi-make racing saloon series in the UK and it is increasing in popularity.

Championship organiser Gary Woodcock said: "It is the only place where you can see the Super Tourers running.

"The sight and sound of these hybrid monsters with their big wings, wide tyres, whistling turbos, flame-spitting exhausts and stunning graphics, provide racing fans with everything they could want in terms of on-track spectacle."

The Carmarthenshire circuit is a popular venue and has staged a round of the British Formula Three Championship, which featured Formula One driver Jensen Button.

It has been used extensively as a testing circuit by many Formula One teams and some of the most famous names in the sport, such as former world champions Alain Prost and the late Ayrton Senna.
