Welsh heart-throb actor Ioan Gruffudd has said he wants to become a father before he gets too old to kick a ball around.

The 28-year-old from Cardiff is about to appear on our screens in three major TV productions over the next few weeks.

But he revealed his desire for children in an intereview with the Sunday Mirror's Personal magazine.

"But I'd love to be a father one day and I wouldn't want to leave it too long, either, " said Gruffudd.

Once voted America's most eligible bachelor, Gruffudd is currently dating Alice Evans, whom he met on the set of the Disney blockbuster 102 Dalmations two years ago.

He told the magazine he had not expected to get involved with another actor when he began his very successful career.

"But now I do feel that only another actor can understand the nature of the beast.

"It's mutually supportive," he added.

Gruffudd, who shares a London flat with fellow Welsh actor Matthew Rhys, has been very busy recently and will be hardly off the small screen in the coming weeks.

He stars in a reprise of the swashbuckling Hornblower role which starts on ITV on Sunday.

On Easter Saturday, Gruffudd steps out of perod costume to star in the BBC adaptation of Tony Parsons' book Man and Boy.

He plays Harry Silver who is left to bring up his four-year-old son, Pat, when his wife walks out of him after he has a one-night stand.

Then he appears on our sceens again as Bosinney in the ITV remake of the classic period drama The Forsyte Saga the following week.

Ealier this month it was confirmed Gruffudd's mother Gill Griffiths has been appearing in the long-running Welsh language soap opera Pobol y Cwm (Valley People).

Gruffudd himself has a part in the drama for five years before he won a place at Rada.

He also appeared alongside his actress mother in the Oscar nominated Solomon a Gaenor.
