Prince Edward ends mid Wales tour
Prince Edward toured Llandovery College
The Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, has completed a two day tour of mid Wales with a visit to Llandovery College and Brecon Cathedral.
The Prince met pupils at the college taking part in the Duke Of Edinburgh award scheme of which he is a patron before attending a special carol service at the cathedral.
The Countess of Wesses who suffered the trauma of an ectopic pregnancy two weeks ago did not accompany the prince to Wales. However, he said she was resting and now feeling better. On Friday, Prince Edward began the second day of his tour of mid Wales with a breakfast seminar at Llangoed Hall near Brecon. The event focused on social inclusion units and complementary education providers in Powys. The scheme looks at providing opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds to take part in the awards scheme. The Earl of Wessex then officially opened the new information technology centre at Llandovery College. Prince Edward was also shown events and activities linked to the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme. He met gold award participants involved in the Coleg Elidyr programme, which is linked to a special school set up for young people.
Although they broke up for the Christmas holidays a week ago, there were plenty of pupils who came back to college on Friday especially to welcome the prince. "All the children work very hard on the scheme," said Llandovery College warden Peter Logan. "For the Earl to come today its recognition of their hard work and the staff's." As a patron of the Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme, he was keen to find out how students taking part are getting on. The prince's two-day visit finished with a visit to Brecon Cathedral, where he is attend a carol service for award participants and supporters and leaders of the scheme in Wales. On Thursday Prince Edward attended functions at Llangoed Hall, Llyswen, Brecon, including a private drinks reception for local landowners and farmers from the Brecon Beacons. Pupils from Amman Valley Comprehensive School entertaind guests at the reception.
