You have to wonder why this has happened, it is very violent times we live in

Detective Chief Superintendent Wyn Phillips, South Wales Police
The elderly woman was discovered by a warden at the Haven Flats at 14:45BST on Friday.

Officers are carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area and speaking to elderly residents in the 22 flat complex.

Detectives who are working on the murder case have expressed their shock at the nature of the attack.

Violent times

Leading the investigation Detective Chief Superintendent Wyn Phillips from South Wales Police said: "An elderly person meeting a violent death in her home is very disturbing.

"One of our main considerations is to reassure the other elderly people living in the complex.

"You have to wonder why this has happened, it is very violent times we live in.

"At this moment we are not looking at it as a burglary.

"We would appeal for anyone who was in the area on Friday afternoon and saw anything suspicious to contact us."
