Hopkins and Jones voted film greats
Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones
Welsh-born celebrities Sir Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones have been voted among the top British actors of all time.

The Silence of the Lambs star has been named runner-up to James Bond heart-throb Sir Sean Connery in a survey of movie fans.

One person who is not likely to send Hopkins her congratulations is Neath Assembly Member Gwenda Thomas.

She was so outraged when he announced his decision to become a US citizen that she demanded that the Freedom of the Borough of Port Talbot - granted to Sir Anthony four years ago - should be removed.

Newly-wed Catherine Zeta Jones was voted third in the list of female actors - following Julie Walters and Dame Judi Dench.

Both Zeta Jones and Hopkins are in illustrious company in the list.

Hopkins beat veteran actors like Sir Alec Guinness, Sir John Mills, and Lord Olivier to get the second spot.

Guinness was regarded as one of the finest actors Britain ever produced.

Instead, younger actors like Ewan McGregor and Robert Carlyle are rewarded with places.

Zeta Jones has only become one of the darlings of Hollywood in the past few years.

But she stilll strode ahead in the Orange Film Survey, pushing aside more seasoned performers like Helen Mirren, Dame Margaret Rutherford, and Dame Maggie Smith.

As well as discovering who we like to watch in the cinema, the survey also found cinema-goers to be a dozy bunch.

Nearly half of all those who took part admitted they had fallen asleep at the cinema - and almost a quarter had nodded off in the past three months.

The full poll results were as follows:

  • Top British actors:
  • 1. Sir Sean Connery

  • 7. Robert Carlyle
  • 8. Ewan McGregor
