Ex-scout leader denies manslaughter

A former scout leader has denied the manslaughter of a boy who fell 600ft to his death from a mountainside in north Wales.

Jonathan Attwell, 10, suffered fatal injuries after falling from the East Ridge of Mount Snowdon in north Wales, while on a Scout Association trip in October 1999.

Peter Finlay, 50,from Bristol, pleaded not guilty at Chester Crown Court to manslaughter of the child.

Jonathan, from the Oldland Common area of Bristol, was with a party of 12 children aged between 10 and 15 led by four adults from the 19th Kingswood Scout Troop.

He fell to his death as he neared the 3,560ft summit of Mount Snowdon.

At an inquest held in Caernarfon in February last year, coroner Dewi Pritchard recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Finlay, of Hazelbury Drive, Bristol, was remanded on bail until 25 April, when the trial is due to start.
