Man held after river search alert

A major search operation for a man who was reported missing in a river was called off in the early hours after a 20-year-old came forward to police.

Helicopters, fire crews and coastguard were called in to search for a man reportedly spotted in the River Carron in Falkirk on Thursday evening.

The search was called off after a man came forward at about 0100 GMT.

The 20-year-old man is due to appear at Falkirk Sheriff Court on 11 December in connection with a breach of the peace.

A statement from Central Scotland Police said: "There was no trace of anyone in the water despite extensive searches in difficult conditions.

"At approximately 1am the search was called off after a 20-year-old man came forward to the police.

"He is currently in police custody and will be subject of a report to the procurator fiscal."
