Police probe 'suspicious' blaze

A three-storey tenement in the Douglas area of Dundee was evacuated after a blaze at a second-floor flat, which police have described as "suspicious".

Fire crews were called to the property at 28, Balmerino Road shortly before 0500 GMT on Saturday.

When they arrived they found the flat well alight. Initially there were fears that someone might have been trapped inside.

However, investigations revealed the flat was empty.

Residents in neighbouring properties were led from the building as a precaution.

A spokeswoman for Tayside Fire and Rescue Service said initial investigations revealed the fire had been set at three different locations within the flat.

Tayside Police said no-one was injured in the blaze although the property was badly damaged.

They appealed for anyone who might have witnessed anything suspicious to contact them.
