Post office will not be reopened

Royal Mail said changes were needed to sustain the service

Royal Mail has said a village post office will remain closed despite opposition from locals and politicians.

The company said future services at Fintry in Stirlingshire would be provided by a mobile unit, which will visit the area twice a week.

The news came after residents, the local MP, MSP and Stirling Council all said they were against the plan.

The village post office was closed on 12 August following the resignation of the subpostmistress.

Mail bosses had insisted that the low numbers of people using the service made a permanent post office in the village "unviable".

'Extra services'

The mobile service will operate from two locations, including Balgair Caravan Park, for a total of three hours per week.

Robert Findlay, field change advisor for Post Office Ltd, said: "Post Office Ltd is introducing this new service to Fintry to help safeguard post office services in the long-term and for these services to be sustainable and viable going forward.

"We have also introduced an extra stopping point for this service at the request of those residents living at the caravan park to allow greater accessibility.

"The facilities and service that we provide to our customers is of paramount importance and the mobile will also allow extra services, such as car tax and foreign currency to be brought direct to Fintry."
