Central Scotland Police has said it is "saddened and shocked" by the death of a former officer killed in a car crash in Northern Ireland. Ronald Malloy, 59, and his wife Jean, 61, from Bannockburn, died when their car hit a lorry on the hard shoulder of the A1, near Newry, on Friday. A decorated officer, Mr Malloy served 30 years with the force, 28 of which were spent with the road policing unit. In recent years he worked with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency. Central Scotland Police Assistant Chief Constable John Mauger said Mr Malloy's work with the force had helped improve road safety.
He said: "There is no doubt that his contributions during his 30-year service has impacted on road safety in our force area. "Road policing colleagues were still in regular contact with Ronnie when he left the force as he worked with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (Vosa). "Officers often worked beside Ronnie as they carried out joint operations with Vosa. "Ronnie and Jean Malloy will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with their family and friends." During his time with the force, Mr Malloy received the Chief Superintendent's Commendation for initiative and tenacity after pursuing a stolen vehicle involved in a housebreaking at high speed into the Strathclyde area, where its occupants were arrested. 'Outstanding career' In February 1993, he received the same award for zeal and perseverance after securing the arrest of a motorist who gave false details and was wanted by another force for serious offences. He was also given the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in January 1996. Mr Mauger added: "Colleagues are saddened and shocked at the death of Ronnie and his wife Jean. He was well liked and held in high regard with those he worked beside. "He had an exemplary and outstanding career." Mr Malloy was killed after his car hit a parked lorry on the A1 Newry Road between Loughbrickland and Newry at about 1330 BST on Friday. Police have appealed for any witnesses to contact them. No-one was in the lorry at the time of the accident.
