Green scheme boosts youth skills

A voluntary scheme which gives young people the chance to work in the conservation or tourism industry has been launched in Falkirk.

Green Action, aimed at those between the ages of 16 and 24, will offer the chance to take part in activities such as tree planting or waterway operation.

The project, led by the Waterways Trust Scotland, will involve 150 placements over the next two years.

Many of the activities will be held at the Falkirk Wheel and Union Canal.

Funding for 75 of the 150 placements will be ring-fenced for young tenants from Linkwide and Paragon Housing Associations.

Karen Moore from the Waterways Trust said: "Recent employment statistics highlight the issues ahead for the younger generation in particular.

"This project will help some of the area's young people gain knowledge and skills to boost their confidence and to competitively compete in the job market."
