Firefighters found the badly burned body of the woman inside the flat

A 71-year-old woman has died and a man was left seriously injured following a fire at a flat in Dundee.

Firefighters were called to the first-floor property in Laidon Terrace just before 1900 BST on Tuesday.

They discovered the badly burned body of Doreen Doig and the unconscious 66-year-old man.

The man was taken to Ninewells Hospital after breathing in a lot of smoke. He is on a ventilator and his condition is described as serious but stable.

The fire was confined to the living room and was quickly brought under control.

A spokesman for Tayside Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fact that fire crews took only two minutes to respond to this incident further highlights that an emergency response alone will not save all the lives that are lost in fires."

He urged people to have a free home safety fire visit, which he said could save lives.

The fire service is carrying out a joint investigation with Tayside Police and the flat has been cordoned off for examination.
