Boy, 14, shot with airgun pellet

A teenager has appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court charged with shooting a boy in the chest with an airgun.

Kevin Mullen, 16, was accused of firing at the 14-year-old as he played in Finavon Street on Saturday. He made no plea and was released on bail.

The injured boy was initially taken to Ninewells Hospital after the incident.

However, he was transferred to Yorkhill Children's Hospital in Glasgow for surgery to remove the pellet from his chest cavity.

News of the incident emerged as the second phase of a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of airguns was launched by the Scottish Government.

The campaign, which uses adverts, the internet, posters and leaflets, is resuming for the summer because police believe that is when airgun incidents are most likely to take place.
