Scottish fans cheer on Murray

Queues at Wimbledon
People have been queuing overnight just to get into the grounds

Scottish fans have come out in force to support Andy Murray as he seeks to make history at Wimbledon.

Many joined the long queues and camped overnight just to get into the grounds so they could head up to Murray Mount and watch his semi-final match with Andy Roddick on big screens.

If he wins, Murray will become the first British player for 71 years to reach the Wimbledon men's final.

Large Saltires were missing from the queues, as flags above a certain size were being confiscated.

And for many people it was a rude awaking as the stewards woke them up at about 0600 BST so they could queue up in an orderly fashion.

Derek, originally from Dundee, was proving how hardy the Scots were by camping overnight without a tent.

Scottish cyclist Mark Beaumont sent a good luck message to Andy Murray

He came with just a rucksack and a towel, which he laid on the grass. However, he did admit he had to shelter in the toilet block or under trees when the rain came on.

Derek is confident that the 22-year-old from Dunblane can go all the way.

"He genuinely has a real chance of winning," he said.

"I think that a lot of folk realise that and I think that's why a lot of folk are coming along to support him.

"I always like to see the Scots do well wherever they go. Scotland has had its fair share of knocks when it comes to the football, but I think Andy Murray might just buck that trend."

Wendy, who is from Bishopbriggs but now lives in West Sussex, was also in the queue.

She said: "It's so exciting. This is our third time coming.

Rock, Salt and Nails

"We were here on Monday, sitting on the hill until very late at night, and I am hoping we've another epic tonight."

Martin, from Edinburgh, has been visiting Wimbledon for the last 13 years or so and also believes Murray has a good chance of winning.

"I think he's up for a hard game today because obviously Roddick's a hard hitter, but I think Murray will come through in the end," he said.

"The stamina he's shown this year - I think he will do well."

Shetland band Rock, Salt and Nails - who have written a song called Volley Highway to encourage Murray - are at Wimbledon playing for the queuing fans.

Vocalist Paul Johnston said: "A lot of us and a lot of our friends have been watching him since he was a young boy and we know what he can do.

"A lot of folk down here think he's a dour kind of Scottish guy that's always saying the wrong things to the wrong people.

"But he's just so focussed on tennis, that's all he wants to do - play tennis and win this championship."
