A Dundee University graduate has made the perfect start to her career as a fashion designer - by selling one of her creations to a top model.

Fashion icon Erin O'Connor was in the city to open the Dundee Degree Show.

She watched a catwalk parade by students before heading backstage to order a white, studded leather jacket from graduate Hayley Scanlan, 25.

Ms O'Connor is to e-mail her measurements to the the designer so a tailor-made jacket can be created.

As well as being a top model, Ms O'Connor is also the chairwoman of the British Fashion Council and a trustee of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

'Love fashion'

She said: "I am a person like anyone else - I like to shop and I love fashion and when I saw that jacket I thought, 'I have to have that first.'

"There was so much brilliant stuff in a great show from the students and I am delighted to have seen it all."

Ms Scanlan said: "I'm just absolutely blown away.

"Someone said to me right after the show finished that Erin wanted to try my jacket on, and I couldn't believe it.

"But next thing she was trying it on and saying she definitely wanted one. Its absolutely fantastic."

More than 260 graduating students will be displaying their fine art, jewellery, animation and design projects at Degree Show 09.

It is open to the public from Saturday until 6 June at the Vision building.
