Teenager charged over fire murder

Jessica McCagh died in hospital after suffering severe burns

A 17-year-old has been charged with murdering his girlfriend by pouring petrol on her and setting her on fire at a flat in Arbroath, Angus.

Jessica McCagh, 17, suffered severe burns and died in hospital after the blaze in Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

Stewart Blackburn was due to appear at Arbroath Sheriff Court, but the hearing was switched to a police station after an angry crowd gathered at the court.

Mr Blackburn made no plea or declaration and was held in custody.

He also faced charges of assault and discharging a firearm.

A crowd of about 200 people gathered outside Arbroath Sheriff Court to wait for his appearance.

Ms McCagh died in Ninewells Hospital after the fire, which broke out at about 0430 BST on Saturday.
