Tribute to murdered Big Issue man

Big Issue
Tributes from Mr McDade's sister are featured in the article

The latest edition of the Big Issue is paying tribute to one of its sellers who was murdered in Dundee.

The body of Patrick McDade, 37, was found at his flat in Brown Constable Street on Friday 23 January.

Police have described the way Mr McDade, known as Paddy, was killed as "particularly violent."

Mr McDade had been selling the magazine for five years. The new edition features tributes from his sister, customers and a fellow vendor.

'New life'

Editor of the magazine Paul McNamee said: "People get very attached to their own vendors and we get to know them.

"There's a sense of personal loss when you hear something like that [about the murder].

"Everybody has just said what a fantastic fella he was, how he couldn't do enough to help other people."

The editor added that Mr McDade had been turning his life around for the better.

"He had re-established his relationship with his daughter and they'd begun to talk, they'd begun to get through the problems and issues they'd had," he said.

"At the same time he was getting control of a drug problem that had blighted him for a number of years and he was really fighting it and beating it.

"He had really gone from a position of total destitution where he had nothing, where he was sleeping rough a few years ago and he worked hard to make a new life for himself."
