Gaelic forum to ensure Mod legacy

Falkirk Town Centre
The Mod was held in Falkirk from 10-18 October 2008

A forum to promote Highland culture in the Forth Valley is to be set up in Falkirk.

The Falkirk and District Gaelic Forum will operate as a steering group to develop the Gaelic language, culture and music across the area.

The move follows the success of the Royal National Mod in October last year which drew more than 10,000 visitors to the town.

The forum will source funding from national bodies like Bòrd na Gàidhlig.

The inaugural meeting is set to be held in Falkirk Council's Municipal Chambers on 20 January.

'Clear demand'

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Angus MacDonald, chair of the Mod 08 local organising committee, said: "Last year we identified a clear demand for increased provision of Gaelic language classes and more traditional music sessions in the area, and that will be just part of the remit of the new Gaelic Forum.

"I would encourage all supporters of the Gaelic language and culture to take advantage of this opportunity to get involved in promoting the language and music of the Highlands.

"We have been encouraged by news last week that Bòrd na Gàidhlig have awarded us a grant to set up the forum, and we clearly wish to get the ball rolling as quickly as possible."
