The Angus designated driver scheme aims to cut down on drink-driving

Pubs, clubs and restaurants in Angus have been urged to help prevent drink-driving by offering free or reduced priced soft drinks.

A designated driver scheme has been set up by police in the county.

Participating venues will offer cheap or free juices to those who will be driving two or more passengers home.

A total of 64 motorists were arrested for drinking and driving in Tayside during last year's festive crackdown on offenders.

Wanda Gove, from Tayside Police, said: ''I would encourage licensed premises to join the scheme and take a proactive approach to reducing the opportunities for drink-driving and help us to enhance road safety and in so doing make the community a safer place for visitors and residents alike.''

Gail Forbes, from the Forbes of Kingennie resort, added: "We know from experience that encouraging people to be the designated driver for their friends works.

"Drivers can take it in turns - on different evenings - to ferry friends around safely and everyone can have an enjoyable and safe night out."
