Storm prompts Met weather warning

Heavy rain and high winds are forecast for the area throughout the day

The Met office has issued a severe weather warning for parts of central Scotland.

Up to 50mm of rain is forecast to fall on already saturated ground across Stirling and Perthshire.

Heavy rain and flooding has already affected the west of Scotland where two motorists trapped by rising water near Faslane were rescued by MoD police.

The weather has also led to the cancellation of ferry services between Ullapool and Stornoway.

Sailings to the Sound of Barra have also been cancelled.

In central Scotland and Tayside the rain is expected to be widespread, persistent with bursts of up to 15mm likely over just three hours.

People are being advised to refer to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) for live flood warnings and Traffic Scotland for road information.

Sepa currently has 12 flood watches in place for rivers across the country.

'High winds'

A spokeswoman said: "In the Stirling area river levels are high and currently rising.

"With rain still falling, the River Teith is likely to flood into the Meadows car park in Callander in the next three to six hours.

"Agricultural land adjacent to the Teith and the Forth will also be affected."

The spokeswoman said that no property was expected to be directly threatened from river flooding.

River levels are expected to peak some time this evening.

BBC Scotland forecaster Heather Reid said high winds would also affect the area.

"The heavy rain is going to continue across the area for much of the day which could seriously affect the roads and make driving conditions a problem," she said.

"Gale-force winds are also forecast of up to 50mph and when you combine the two factors, people need to take care."

Traffic Scotland said strong winds were affecting the Forth, Kincardine and Tay Bridges, as well as the A9 between Dunblane and Perth, the A84, A85 and A82.

The A814 next to the Faslane nuclear submarine base remains closed due to flooding.

The worst of the weather is expected to clear by this evening.
