Ban for tower block problem pair

Residents in the Hilltown have suffered several years of problems

A second flat in a multi-storey in Dundee has been closed up and the tenants thrown out after allegations of violence and drug use by visitors.

The 38-year-old man and 26-year-old woman will not be allowed to return to their council flat in Dallfield Court in the Hilltown for three months.

Two weeks ago a family living on the same landing were also banned.

Neighbours had reported drug taking on the stairs, needles were found, and blood and human waste discovered.

There was fighting at all hours of the day and night and the main entrance to the tower block had been forced several times.

In the past three months, police have received almost 30 calls about the household.

Since November, 167 needles have been collected by police or the council in the area around the property.

Supt Colin Mackay said: "We hope that this latest closure order will provide residents with the respite they deserve and that they can live their lives in relative peace and quiet.

"The actions we have taken are further evidence of the work that we are doing under Operation Waterloo - aiming to tackle drugs activity and anti-social behaviour to improve the quality of life for the law abiding majority in Dundee."

George Regan, convener of Dundee City Council's housing committee, added: "The decision to grant a closure order in this case is one that we welcome as a demonstration of the effectiveness of the council's anti-social behaviour team and the help it can give to local residents.

"The council works in partnership with the police and other agencies to help deal with behaviour like this that is totally unacceptable.
