Appeal for bank robbery vehicle

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the car to come forward

Detectives investigating an attempt by a gun-carrying masked man to rob a bank in Dundee believe he was driving a black Nissan Qashqai.

The culprit struck at the Royal Bank of Scotland in Strathmartine Road at about 0820 BST on Friday.

He struggled with a female staff member outside the branch and threatened her with the weapon before making off empty-handed as a passer-by intervened.

The vehicle he used was seen parked outside the RBS on previous mornings.

The woman who was threatened was not injured but has been left extremely shaken.

The suspect is between 40 and 49 years old, about 6ft tall, stocky and he was wearing a black tammy hat, black coat and was carrying a black holdall or rucksack.

Det Insp Ally Reid, the officer leading the inquiry, said: "Immediately prior to the robbery the Nissan was seen parked in Kingsway West and had also been seen parked directly outside the bank on Wednesday and Thursday morning.

"I would appeal to anyone who owns a black Nissan Qashqai to make sure they know where their vehicle was on Friday morning and also during the days leading up to the attempted robbery, and to think about who had or may currently have access to their vehicle.

"The bank is situated on the corner of Strathmartine Road and Kingsway West, an exceptionally busy junction with both pedestrians and motorists, particularly at that time in the morning."

He urged anyone who witnessed the attempted hold-up, or who may have seen the man or the Nissan Qashqai to get in touch.

Det Insp Reid added: "Every bit of information we receive is helpful to the inquiry team.

"We know there were a lot of cars, buses and people walking in the area and someone may have vital information for us."
