Couple say supermarket 'Aisle do'

Kenneth and Jane read their vows
Crowds of guests and shoppers watched the wedding

Two supermarket colleagues have got married in the aisles of the store in Dundee where they work and first met.

Crowds of shoppers gathered to watch checkout operator Jane Clark, 42, and Kenneth Sutherland, 32, tie the knot at Sainsbury's in Baldovie Road.

The bride walked down the seasonal goods aisle to Big Girl (You are Beautiful) by Mika before the ceremony.

The couple met three years ago when the new Mrs Sutherland spotted her husband-to-be stacking shelves.

'Something different'

Mr Sutherland proposed in 2006 and the couple have been planning the supermarket wedding ever since.

The bride even emailed Sainsbury's CEO Justin King to get permission.

She said: "I just wanted to do something different, all our friends are here, colleagues, we just wanted the family atmosphere."

Mr Sutherland added: "I thought it was brilliant, because I've been with the company for 12 years and I never thought of doing something like this.

"It was an absolutely gobsmacking, but brilliant idea, because of my length of service, I thought: 'yes, do it, go for it!'"

The couple's vows were different from those you would hear at a normal wedding as well.

The groom's included promises not to nudge too hard when his new wife was snoring and also to look after her collection of fuzzy wigs.

The bride's contained pledges to learn to cook something other than beans on toast, never ask 'does my bum look big in this' and expect an honest answer and a promise to only buy one pair of shoes a month.

The wedding register was then signed to the Birdie Song before the couple toured the store.

The groom's mother, Mary Liddle, admitted she was surprised when first told about the supermarket wedding, but quickly came around.

"Shock, disbelief, 'you're kidding'," she said.

"But it's him, he's been in Sainsbury's since he left school, so that's been his first job, so he's grown up with them.

"It's been wonderful - they've bent over backwards to make this a happy occasion for them."

The new Mr and Mrs Sutherland both agreed that the day had gone even better than they had hoped for.

And the groom recommended others try a supermarket marriage as well.

He said: "Definitely, because you can watch the ceremony and then go do your shopping afterwards."
