GSK workers warned of job losses

Employees at GlaxoSmithKline's plant in Montrose have been warned to expect redundancies.

A review of its activities is under way as the firm tries to save £700m a year by 2010 across its global operations.

There are currently about 450 permanent and temporary staff at the pharmaceutical factory in Angus.

The number losing their jobs will not be known until the review is completed in about a month's time, but GSK said the number would be "small".

'Positive outcome'

A spokeswoman added that the review was necessary because the pharmaceutical sector was changing and worldwide efficiencies were essential.

She reassured workers that a full consultation would be undertaken if redundancies were announced.

Angus MSP Andrew Welsh said: "I have received assurances from GSK management that 'it is unlikely that Montrose will close or any sale will be proposed', which will be a relief to everyone given the crucial importance of GSK to the local economy.

"While unfortunately there could be some redundancies involved it is essential to secure the maximum continuance of this complex in Montrose and Angus.

"I will be contacting GSK directly to seek further information during the review process and will do whatever I can to encourage a positive outcome."
