Nosy drivers blocked fire access

Two fire engines were delayed for about 10 minutes

Firefighters have hit out at motorists who stopped their cars to watch a fire - blocking access for approaching fire engines.

About 20 firefighters tackled the blaze at Balhungie Farm near Monifieth, which broke out at about 2030 BST on Tuesday.

The fire started in a barn containing tractors and propane gas cylinders.

Some cars, which had stopped on the farm approach road, had to be pushed clear before fire engines could get access to the site.

An investigation to find the cause of the blaze is already under way.

Station Manager Neil McKay said: "The smoke plume from this fire was visible for two to three miles over Monifieth, this caused many casual observers to arrive like moths attracted to a flame.

"Access to the fire scene for fire engines was down a track which became totally blocked due to a lack of consideration and foresight of some car drivers who, by blocking this track, delayed the arrival of two of the fire engines for more than 10 minutes.

"Despite this, 250 pigs in an adjoining building were saved due to the efforts of the fire crews."
