A murderer who is on the run from an open prison in Angus may be in the Glasgow area, according to police.

John Bowden, from London, has spent the past 26 years in jail for dismembering a man with a machete, saw and electric carving knife while he was still alive.

He then kept his victim's head in his fridge before it was dumped in a bin.

Bowden, 51, failed to return to HMP Noranside on Thursday after being given permission to go on a shopping trip to Forfar with other prisoners.

Officers involved in the operation to find Bowden have received numerous calls from the public and have said indications so far point towards him being in Glasgow.

He is 5ft 7in tall, of medium build, with grey/white receding hair.

He has a fair complexion, deep set, blue eyes and has a tattoo on his right arm which says "Ireland the Brave".

When last seen, he was wearing prison-issue blue jeans with a light-coloured, possibly purple, blouson-style top with a white logo on the left breast.

All UK police forces and port authorities have been warned Bowden is at large.

Anyone who sees him is being warned not to approach him.
