Legion probe unearths cash error

The Legion says book-keeping procedures will be reviewed
A Royal British Legion branch has been reinstated after an inquiry into its finances ruled out any mismanagement.

The Perth branch, which is a registered charity, was suspended from the organisation last month after claims of irregularities in the accounts.

However, an internal inquiry has found that an administrative error was to blame.

The organisation's constitution is now set to be altered to clarify the correct procedure for book-keeping.

Royal British Legion Scotland spokesman Neil Griffiths told the BBC Scotland news website the "missing" money had been processed by the "wrong committee".

He said: "The constitution isn't clear which committee the money should go through.

"Too much has been done on precedent and we are having to rewrite the constitution.

"We will have to learn lessons from this episode and the constitution must be clarified."

The Royal British Legion, which supports service personnel and their families, confirmed that it has lifted the suspension of its Perth branch following the probe.

The allegations were investigated by the area council for Angus and Perth, which is made up of elected members.

The Royal British Legion Scotland will vote on changes to its constitution at the annual conference in Perth next May.
