Deportation for cannabis grower

The bungalow was packed with hundreds of plants

An illegal Chinese immigrant is to be deported for running a major drugs farm in Angus.

Zhi Peng Lin was jailed for 45 months after he admitted growing cannabis with a street value of £84,900.

The 31-year-old was caught when police raided a bungalow in Forfar after an anonymous tip-off.

Forfar Sheriff Court heard he thought the 850 plants were being grown to make air fresheners. His defence claimed he was being used as a "drug slave"

The Crown agreed he was not the one benefiting from the operation.

The court was told Lin arrived illegally in the UK in 2005 and had been trying to save enough money to travel back to his family in China.

He was offered a job as a gardener in Scotland, while he was working as a waiter in Manchester.

Jailing Lin, the sheriff said there was a dererrent element to the sentence because of the value of the drugs involved.
