Child cancer fear over pylon plan

MPs say the Beauly to Denny line should be 200m away from homes
Fresh health concerns have been raised about plans for a new 137 mile power line between Denny and Beauly.

A committee of MPs has concluded there is an "undoubted link" between high voltage cables and childhood leukaemia.

They have recommended the highest pylons should not be allowed within 200m of schools and homes.

Labour MP Michael Connarty has called on the Scottish government to make sure the advice is followed if the proposed power line is approved.

The Falkirk East MP was on the Westminster cross-party group which considered the link between electricity pylons and the illness.

The politicians said while they could not be sure whether one causes the other, there was an "undoubted link".

As a precaution, they have recommended homes and schools should not be allowed within 60m of high voltage lines, and 200m in the case of the proposed Beauly to Denny line.

A public inquiry into the development began in February, which is examining concerns about the impact on tourism, environment and health.
