A 31-year-old woman has been killed and a man and three children have been injured after a crash on a busy motorway.

Doreen McGregor from Dalgety Bay, Fife, died following the two-car crash which happened on the M80 near Falkirk at about 1105 BST on Sunday.

The man suffered serious injuries while three children were checked by doctors at Stirling Royal Infirmary.

Central Scotland Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash.

They say a green Vauxhall Astra collided with a blue Ford Focus which was standing stationary on the hard shoulder.

As a result, Ms McGregor was fatally injured, while a 31-year-old man was seriously injured and three children aged 10, seven and five sustained slight injuries.

All were occupants of the Ford Focus.

The driver of the Vauxhall Astra also sustained slight injuries.

The motorway, which had been closed southbound between J5 and J4, was reopened following a full collision investigation.

A police spokesman said a 56-year-old man will be the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal.
