Angling has been described as a "superb hobby"

A national project has been set up to attract 50,000 young people in Scotland into angling over 10 years and help cut down on anti-social behaviour.

Actor and TV presenter Paul Young is to launch the Scottish National Angling Programme (SNAP) at Kingennie Fisheries, near Broughty Ferry, Angus.

SNAP, which is to be launched on 13 April, was initiated by the Scottish Countryside Alliance Educational Trust.

It is supported by all the leading angling organisations in Scotland.

As part of the event, a new online angling club will also be launched.

'Superb hobby'

The Castaways club will be run for and by young Scots anglers, giving them access to cheap fishing, tackle and clothing.

Tony Andrews, founder of SNAP and chairman of SCAET, said the new initiative will help combat anti-social behaviour.

"Everyone is concerned about anti-social behaviour and children with nothing to do," he said.

"Angling offers young people a superb hobby with the chance to learn new skills and to spend time in the countryside.

"SNAP will not only rejuvenate Scottish angling but will help to improve our communities."
