Friend of murdered girl sought
Carol Lannen
Police are still receiving fresh information on the murder
Detectives have urged a male friend of a teenage girl who was murdered 28 years ago to come forward.

The body of 18-year-old Carol Lannen was found in Templeton Woods on the outskirts of Dundee on 21 March 1979.

Her killer has never been found, but police believe a friend thought to be called Roger could have vital information about her death.

The man, who lived in a flat between numbers 56 and 60 in Dundee's Main Street, may have been a bus driver.

He would have been aged between 25 and 30 at the time, so would now be in his late fifties or early sixties.

He was described as being of stocky build with light brown hair swept back off his face and had long prominent side burns. He spoke with a Dundee accent.

'Ran errands'

The man is not being treated as a suspect, but officers said they believed he may be able to help with their inquiries by providing additional information about other associates or friends of Miss Lannen and other locations that she may have been visiting.

Det Ch Insp Ewen West, the officer leading the inquiry, said: "We know that Carol was friendly with this man, visited him at his home, and there is information to suggest that she sometimes ran errands for him.

"She certainly had some contact with him and it is important to find out what their association together was.

"If anyone can assist us in identifying who this man might be, or if you think you might be the man we are looking for, please get in touch with us.

"Any small piece of information could be of great assistance to the investigation and people should not hesitate to pass any detail to the inquiry team however insignificant they think it may be."

Det Ch Insp West said despite the murder being committed almost 30 years ago, the file on the case had never been closed.

He added that fresh information on the crime was still being received and investigated.

Miss Lannen left her home in Dundee's Hill Street on the night of 20 March and was known to have been in the Castle Street and Exchange Street areas of Dundee city centre, an area she frequented on a regular basis.

She was last seen wearing a white polo neck jumper, a brown mid-length striped skirt with matching tie belt, a black velvet jacket, and black laced shoes with metal toe caps.

On Sunday 1 April 1979, some of Miss Lannen's clothing was found on the banks of the River Don near the A96 between Hatton of Fintry and Kintore, Aberdeenshire.

The investigation has now amassed more than 6,000 documents and resulted in almost 3,000 statements being taken.

Anyone who thinks they can identify the man, or who thinks they might be the person detectives are looking for, should contact Tayside Police on 01382 223200 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
