Chef and football legend honoured

Top chef Nick Nairn and Scottish football legend Alan Hansen have been given honorary doctorates by the University of Stirling.

Mr Nairn received the award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Scottish cuisine and his work in promoting healthy eating.

Mr Hansen has been honoured for his contribution to sport.

Professor Paul Lovejoy received a Doctorate of the University for his work on the history of slavery.

Also honoured were Dr Ian Laing, a consultant in neonatology at the Simpson Memorial Pavilion in Edinburgh, and industrialist Donald Macleod.

Mr Nairn was brought up in Callander, and opened his first restaurant, Braeval, near Aberfoyle in 1986 before being awarded a Michelin star five years later.

More recently he has concentrated on developing the Nick Nairn Cook School at Lake of Menteith, with its emphasis on fresh organic produce.

Mr Hansen, who was brought up in Sauchie, Clackmannanshire, played in the Liverpool team that won three European Cups and eight League Championships.

He also won 26 caps for Scotland, and is now best known as a BBC pundit.

University of Stirling Chancellor Dame Diana Rigg conferred the five honorary degrees at the summer graduation ceremonies on Wednesday and Thursday.
