Fears for 800 jobs at NCR plant

The Amicus union has said it fears the worst for up to 800 jobs at the cash machine manufacturer NCR in Dundee.

The US firm, the city's second largest manufacturing employer, has called a meeting of its workforce on Thursday.

There has been concern for the future of the operation since the company opened a plant in Hungary.

The union claimed NCR, which declined to comment ahead of the meeting, had been transferring production to the Hungarian plant in recent months.

Amicus regional officer Gillian McKay said: "Although the company won't share with us the reason for tomorrow's meeting, our members fear the worst.

"If they do confirm closure in Dundee, the implications of 800 job losses for the company's loyal workers and the local economy will be devastating."

NCR said in 2005 that its plant, in Budapest, would "complement" the operation in Dundee.
