Initial plans for a new hospital in Forth Valley have received the backing of local councillors.
The £300m hospital in Larbert would have 800 in-patient and day spaces and a series of other community services.
Outline plans for the development were approved by Falkirk Council's Regulatory Committee on Wednesday.
Healthcare union Unison has expressed disappointment at a move by NHS Forth Valley to build the hospital using private money.
It is hoped the hospital, to be built on the 130 hectare site of the Royal Scottish National Hospital, will open in 2009.
It would replace acute services currently provided at Falkirk and Stirling royal infirmaries.
NHS Forth Valley is also planning new community hospitals for Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire.
