Franz Ferdinand surprised the Dundee Radio 1 crowd
Scottish band Franz Ferdinand have made a surprise appearance at Radio 1's Big Weekend event in Dundee.

The appearance had previously been kept secret because of the band's headlining slot at the T in the Park Festival in Kinross, which is a commercial event.

The Scots rockers played for about 15 minutes on Sunday evening.

Radio 1 bosses had planned to reveal Franz Ferdinand were performing when the tickets for T in the Park, on 8-9 July, sold out in record time.

But they decided to leave it as a surprise for the 15,000 music fans attending the final day of the free music event.

Current single

Colin Murray, Radio 1 DJ, told BBC Scotland's news website: "We thought we wouldn't announce them until after T in the Park sold out, but once it did, we thought we would make it a surprise.

"Hardly anyone knew they were coming."

The band performed a four-song set including Do You Want To, Michael, Take Me Out and current single The Fallen.

Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman had earlier joked with the waiting crowd that the mystery band was The Proclaimers.

But the audience went wild when Franz Ferdinand, who last played in Dundee two years ago in a small venue, took the stage.
