Hawick rugby heroes join Bill McLaren tribute

A celebration of Bill McLaren's life takes place next week

Four former rugby heroes of Hawick, Scotland and the British Lions will join a tribute to commentator Bill McLaren at Murrayfield Stadium.

Hugh McLeod, Colin Deans, Jim Renwick, and Tony Stanger will be part of the event in Edinburgh on 11 March.

The rugby ground will be open free from 1700 GMT for a special celebration to commemorate the "voice of rugby".

Bill McLaren, whose career spanned more than 50 years, died in January at the age of 86.

The Scottish Rugby Union announced shortly afterwards that it intended to stage an event to honour his contribution to the sport.

An evening has now been organised in the run up to the Calcutta Cup match against England.

Mr Stanger, Scotland's joint top try scorer of all time, said it was a "great honour" to attend the event.

'Very privileged'

"I have lots of happy memories from the many years I have known him, from when he was a PE teacher to when he was an internationally known and celebrated commentator," he said.

"Growing up I was very privileged to have been taught by him. His enthusiasm for the game rubbed off on me and many other young boys who were lucky enough to be around him.

"His enthusiasm and passion contributed hugely to me becoming a Scotland internationalist."

The event will be hosted by Dougie Donnelly who will be joined by Scotland's most capped player Chris Paterson.

Other guests include former Welsh international Gerald Davies, ex-England captain Bill Beaumont and former Scotland stars Gavin Hastings and Andy Irvine.
