Murrayfield Stadium is to host a tribute to commentator Bill McLaren, who died last week aged 86.

The event to honour the man known as the "voice of rugby" will take place at the Edinburgh ground on 11 March.

Scottish Rugby said it would be working with the BBC to develop a programme to reflect Mr McLaren's "great passions" which included music as well as rugby.

Screens in the stadium will be used to replay some of his most famous commentaries as part of the event.

Mr McLaren's daughter, Linda Lawson, said the family had been overwhelmed by the kindness shown to them in recent days.

"We are keen to make the event a celebration of dad's life and the things that he loved," she said.

"We also want to make it as accessible as possible so we thought an evening event at Murrayfield, which dad regarded as his second home, would work well.

"And as it's two days before the Calcutta Cup match, we hope that the date will enable supporters from out with Scotland to come along too."

Scottish Rugby's chief executive Gordon McKie said the organisation was honoured to host the celebration.

"Bill's funeral in Hawick earlier this week was very moving," he said.

"We look forward to working in tandem with his family, the BBC and those who wish to add their gratitude for this most gifted Scottish broadcaster who simply brought rugby to life."
