Couple killed in crash identified

Police have identified a couple who were killed in a motorway crash in the south of Scotland at the weekend.

Philip Gerrard, 46, and his wife Pamela, 48, from Winnington, near Northwich in Cheshire, died when their car plunged down an embankment.

The incident happened on the A74(M) near Beattock, Dumfries and Galloway, at about 1140 GMT on Saturday.

A police spokesman said investigations were continuing to establish the cause of the accident.

The motorway was closed northbound for several hours.

Heavy flooding had been reported in the area with numerous roads being closed.
