Drug gardener to appeal sentence

Tron Huy Le admitted producing cannabis at a house in the Borders

A man involved in a £193,000 cannabis farm in the Scottish Borders is to appeal against his four-year jail term.

Tron Huy Le, 43, admitted producing the drug at a house in Gifford Place, West Linton, between 20 June and 12 July.

He was jailed at Jedburgh Sheriff Court earlier this month and also recommended for deportation to his native Vietnam.

His lawyer, Greg McDonnel, confirmed that an appeal against the length of the sentence was set to be lodged with the High Court.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court heard how the Vietnamese man had been hired to water more than 600 plants in a "extensive and complex" cannabis cultivation.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond said the consequences for those engaging in a production process on such scale must be made clear in an effort to deter others.

He added that the jail term had been reduced as a result of the early guilty plea.
