Alert over tax rebate call scam

A number of people have received calls claiming they are due a refund

Homeowners in the Borders have been warned about a council tax rebate scam being operated in the region.

A number of householders have received calls claiming to be from Scottish Borders Council and alleging they are due a refund of up to £3,000.

Residents are then asked to provide bank card details in order that the repayment can be made.

SBC has stressed that the council would never make such calls or ask for bank details over the phone.

Paula Clark, manager of the Safer Communities Team set up by SBC and Lothian and Borders Police, said: "If anyone has passed bank or credit card details to anyone recently regarding a refund they should contact their bank branch or card company immediately.

"This is yet another scam where fraudsters will go to any length to get bank information.

"The important thing to remember is don't give out your personal details."
