Safety plea after rooftop rescue

Roof rescue
The fire service was called out to rescue the girl after she got stuck on the property roof

The fire service has issued a safety warning after a rooftop rescue in the south of Scotland.

A teenage girl slipped and injured her arm on Friday night after scaling a 50ft-high (15m) commercial building near the Lockerbie Road in Dumfries.

Dumfries and Galloway Fire and Rescue Service used aerial ladders to allow paramedics to reach the girl.

Station Manager John Templeton said the incident could have had much more serious consequences.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 2130 GMT on Friday.

It followed reports that the girl had slipped and injured herself after climbing to the top of the property.

"The girl had slipped into a gully for taking water away," said Mr Templeton.

"If that gully had not been there she could have fallen to the ground.

"On this occasion the young lass was very lucky that she did not fall another 15 metres to the concrete ground below."

The fire service was able to bring the girl down to ground level and she was then taken to Dumfries Infirmary for treatment to her arm.
