A computer company has been praised for helping to unearth a haul of hundreds of indecent images of children.

Peter Broadbent, 57, of Threave Terrace, Castle Douglas, was jailed for 10 months for possessing the pictures.

He had put his computer in for repair when the images were discovered and police were called in to investigate.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary praised the "vigilance and prompt action" of the local company owner which helped lead to the conviction.

Det Insp Chris Johnstone said: "Everyone in the community has a duty to help keep our children and young people safe.

"We are grateful on this occasion that the matter was brought to our attention by a very public spirited person."

He urged other people with similar information to contact the police.

District Procurator Fiscal Andrew Richardson said the case highlighted the need for all sections of the community to work together to stop child exploitation.

Serious offence

"These cases are always disturbing and invariably present evidential challenges," he said.

"However, this case shows that through a combination of vigilant members of the public, painstaking and thorough police work and professional prosecution, those involved can be brought to justice.

"The sentence imposed clearly reflects the seriousness of this offence and the images found."

Broadbent had previously admitted possessing 456 indecent images of children in 2007.

He was jailed for the offence at Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court.
