Bridge jumping 'tragedy' warning

Devorgilla bridge
Police are concerned about people jumping from the historic bridge

Police have warned of a potential tragedy following reports of teenagers jumping from a historic bridge in southern Scotland.

A number of young people have recently been spotted leaping from the Devorgilla Bridge in Dumfries into the River Nith.

The incidents have coincided with the current spell of hot weather.

However, police have said that as well as risking injury, the bridge jumpers could be prosecuted for their dives.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary warned that leaping from the bridge - which dates back to the 15th Century - was a dangerous practice.

River levels are currently low, increasing the risks involved.

Police said jumping off the bridge could also lead to a breach of the peace conviction for culpable and reckless conduct.

They said jumpers were also potentially endangering members of the emergency services who were called out to rescue them.
