A young Borders actor has made his TV debut in an Irn Bru advert sending up Disney's High School Musical.

Jack Lowden, 18, of Oxton, near Lauder, appeared on screen in the interval between the Manchester United versus Arsenal Champions League clash.

He plays a part similar to Zac Efron in the Disney film, singing and dancing in the halls of Auchendookit Senior High.

The teenager, now a student in Glasgow, said he was "delighted" to have got the part in the £2m advertising campaign.

The High School Musical spoof has been given a Scottish feel and the catchphrase: "It's Fizzy, It's Ginger, It's Phenomenal."

The former Earlston High School pupil is currently a first year student at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow where he is studying for a BA in Acting.

He said: "I was delighted to get the part.

"When I went to the auditions we were split up into groups so I had no idea at the time whether I was in or out.

"I think the next thing for me is to get back to the academy and get this degree."

Quirky characters

Earlston High's head of music Jeff Thomson said everyone at the school was proud of Jack, praising his hard work and ability.

He added: "The world is his oyster."

AG Barr's commercial director Jonathan Kemp explained the concept behind the advert.

He said: "The idea behind this campaign was to create something that celebrated Irn Bru and Scotland.

"The outcome is a really entertaining mix of quirky characters and down-to-earth Scottish humour."
