A man has died after getting trapped in the sluice gate of a small hydro electric plant on a Scottish estate.

Michael Ingall, 67, was found dead on land at Corsock House, about 10 miles north of Castle Douglas, in Dumfries and Galloway, on Saturday evening.

A police spokesman said it was thought he had been working on the equipment when he fell into the water.

The spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances and it was being treated as a "tragic accident".

Mr Ingall - a retired company director - had gone out to work on his estate on Saturday afternoon.

However, he had failed to return home by early evening, which prompted his wife to raise the alarm and a search was launched.

His body was later found trapped in the sluice section of the hydro-electric plant.

The system uses the waters of a nearby burn to provide power to the estate.

It is understood that Mr Ingall had been working on the equipment when he fell in.

Police said they were still trying to establish the exact circumstances of the fatal accident.
